FAQ’s

What is Osteopathy?
The modern roots of osteopathy date back to 1872. Dr. A.T. Still, a physician, believed that the body contained all the elements necessary for its own healing and that much of the pain and disability we suffer stems from abnormalities in our bodies structure and function.

Osteopaths diagnose and treat problems with muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints to help the body heal.

Treatment involves gentle, manual techniques – easing pain, reducing swelling and improving mobility. Osteopaths also offer you personal advice on stretching and strengthening exercises, posture, workergonomics and stress management.

Osteopathy is based on unique biomechanical principles and is now widely recognised throughout the world as one of the most scientifically validated and effective complementary therapies.

Do I need a referral ?
No. It is not necessary to have a doctor’s referral to consult an Osteopath. However, there are increasing numbers of general practitioners referring patients to Osteopaths and it is often necessary to consult with the patients doctor.
Osteopaths will also refer patients to appropriate diagnostic examinations and/or other specialists, when necessary.

What training does an osteopath undergo?
Osteopathic training requires the completion of a minimum of five years study at univeristy including a two year Master of Osteopathy.

All Osteopaths must be registered with the Osteopaths registration board of Queensland, regulated Federally by the Minister of Health.
The main representative body is the Australian Osteopathic Association, which deals with issues specific to the profession, ie legislation and continual development.
